Quick answer
A DR checker shows a website's Domain Rating, Ahrefs' 0 to 100 score for backlink strength. This free DR checker returns Ahrefs' own value for any domain, labeled "Domain Rating by Ahrefs", or N/A when Ahrefs has no rating.
What does Domain Rating measure?
Domain Rating measures the strength of a website's backlink profile on a logarithmic 0 to 100 scale. The difference between DR 20 and DR 30 is much smaller in real terms than the difference between DR 80 and DR 90.
DR is most useful as a relative signal. Comparing your DR with competitors, or tracking your own DR as you build links, tells you more than the raw number on its own.
How Ahrefs calculates DR
Ahrefs looks at how many unique domains link to a site with followed links and how strong those linking domains are. It counts only one followed link per linking domain, so 500 links from the same site don't add up to more than one. Ahrefs explains the full method in its Domain Rating guide.
DR is calculated for the whole root domain. A subdomain such as blog.example.com shows the same DR as example.com.
What is a good DR?
| DR range | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| 0 to 14 | New sites or sites with very few linking domains |
| 15 to 29 | Small sites with a real, growing link profile |
| 30 to 49 | Established niche sites |
| 50 to 69 | Strong publishers and well-known brands |
| 70 to 100 | Major platforms and national media |
The best benchmark is still the DR of the sites ranking for your keywords.
DR vs DA
DA (Domain Authority) and DR (Domain Rating) both answer the same question, "how strong is this domain's backlink profile?", using different companies' methods and link indexes. They're correlated but rarely identical for the same site. Read our full DA vs PA vs DR comparison for a deeper breakdown.
How to check DR for many sites
- Paste up to 20 domains into the DR checker, one per line. Results are sorted by DR.
- For longer lists, use the bulk checker, which takes up to 100 domains and exports CSV.
- To compare competitors, put up to 5 domains side by side in the comparison tool.
Where the DR data comes from
Every DR on this site comes from Ahrefs' free Domain Rating API and is shown unchanged with the attribution "Domain Rating by Ahrefs". We don't adjust it or fill gaps with our own estimate. See the methodology page for how each metric is sourced.
Frequently asked questions
Domain Rating (DR) is an Ahrefs metric that scores the strength of a website's backlink profile from 0 to 100, compared with every other site in Ahrefs' index. Higher DR means a stronger link profile.
Yes. The DR we show comes from Ahrefs' own free Domain Rating API, so it matches Ahrefs' current value for the domain. We never estimate DR: if Ahrefs has no rating for a domain, or the lookup fails, we show N/A.
A good DR is one at or above the sites ranking for your target keywords. As a rough guide, DR 30 to 49 is a solid niche site and DR 50 or more is a strong, well-linked site.
When Moz data isn't available for a check, our DA is estimated from the site's real Ahrefs DR, so the two stay close. Moz-measured DA, labeled Moz, can differ more.
DR 0 means Ahrefs hasn't found followed links from other domains to the site yet. It's normal for new websites.
