Why homepage PA is usually the highest

Most sites earn the majority of their external links on the homepage: brand mentions, directory listings and partner links all tend to point there. That makes homepage PA a good ceiling for the rest of the site.

Inner pages climb only when they earn links of their own or receive strong internal links from the homepage. A large gap between homepage PA and the PA of a page you care about shows where internal linking can help.

When Page Authority matters more than DA

  • Guest posts and link placements. A new post on a DA 60 site starts with almost no links of its own. A link from an established page with real PA usually carries more weight.
  • Competing for one keyword. Rankings go to pages, so compare your page with the pages on page 1, not just the domains.
  • Choosing which page to build links to. Pages with higher PA are easier to push up.

How to raise Page Authority

  1. Earn links to the page itself. Useful data, tools and guides attract links directly.
  2. Link to it from strong pages on your own site, starting with the homepage.
  3. Redirect old URLs that still have links, so their strength reaches the live page.

Where the PA number comes from

When Moz's API returns it, PA is Moz's measured value for the homepage. Otherwise it's a small, documented adjustment from the domain's DA and labeled Estimated. See the methodology page for details.
